A very in depth history of one of the largest city parks in America Mike Eberts is extremely thorough in his research, and the book can seem endless at times, but the history of Griffith Park is so full of bizarre and interesting stories that I enjoyed it.

I grew up just north of USC in Los Angeles, and many of my childhood memories are associated with Griffith Park Many family gatherings and picnics were held at the park I remember fondly the pony rides and the miniature train rides And many school field trips to the Observatory and Ferndell So when I heard that his book was the definitive history of the park, I had to read it At over 4,000 acres, Griffith Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the world The saga starts with a Spanis I grew up just north of USC in Los Angeles, and many of my childhood memories are associated with Griffith Park Many family gatherings and picnics were held at the park I remember fondly the pony rides and the miniature train rides And many school field trips to the Observatory and Ferndell So when I heard that his book was the definitive history of the park, I had to read it At over 4,000 acres, Griffith Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the world The saga starts with a Spanish land grant to a Spanish soldier named Juan Feliz, which he called Rancho los Feliz The land stayed in the family until just after the Mexican American War The land was too rugged for homes or farms, but the widow was smart in securing the water rights to the LA River that marked the northern and eastern boundaries She validated the rights in the Spanish period, the Mexican period, and in the American period. With the decline of the Californios, the land passed into several American hands, eventually becoming the property of Col Griffith Griffith, a wealthy and eccentric businessman He acquired the Rancho in 1884.Author Mike Eberts tells Col Griffith made his wealth subdividing and selling the flat land on the south side of the Rancho That development is today the up scale Los Feliz area.Griffith then sold his Rancho los Feliz water rights to the city of Los Angeles at below market rates, and secured his reputation as a civic minded person. Then in 1896, Col Griffith donated the Rancho los Feliz to the city, with the stipulation that it be used as a park, that it be called Griffith Park, and that no citizen ever be charged an admission fee to enter the park, otherwise, the ownership would revert to his heirs. The city of Los Angeles was not able to do much to the park during the remainder of the decade The main problem was Los Angeles was that LA was a much smaller city then, and the Park lay outside the city limits.Eberts tells in great detail the history of the development of the park through the remaining years of the 20th century Most of the history concerns the changes in the park that occurred that we take for granted now, but was controversial when they were implemented No change occurred that did not cause heated debate. The history is fascinating I didn t know that pars of the park were used as Prisoner of War camps during World War I I didn t know that there was a military airfield about where the Gene Autry Museum is right now I didn t know that there was a serious wild fire in the park that took the lives of several park workers. This book would probably not be of interest to the general reader, but if you are a Southern California history buff, I highly recommend this book to you
